Top 5 Trends in Outdoor Living – Spring 2019

Australian’s have been embracing outdoor living long before it was a thing but in recent years, we’ve taken it to a whole new level. We’ve created outdoor living rooms, extended our homes with patios and pergolas and truly brought the inside out (or is it the outside in).

Spring 2019 sees a few new trends hitting our homes, so let’s explore the Top 5 on our list as the weather warms up:

A Mix of Materials and Textures

There seems to be something for everyone this season and the flexibility to mix and match in whatever way suits your style. From chunky timber furniture to low-maintenance powder-coated aluminium, we’re seeing a mix of materials and textures outside. Rattan has also made a comeback, in a big way. Material normally associated with the indoors are making their way out to the patio, adding layers of comfort, style and texture.

Bars and Pizza Ovens

We’re expanding your entertaining and cooking options this season. Built in kitchens and awesome barbeques will always have their place, but we’re now seeing backyard and patio bars and pizza ovens. Choose your placement well, so that you don’t waste space, or close in your outdoor living area. And it’s the little touches that will make your backyard bar feel more like the local beer garden with glass racks, wine fridges, beer fridges and even beer taps, as well as ample and comfy seating for your guests. Meanwhile, pizza oven choices are endless with portable gas options, right through to ‘maximum ambience feels’ with a wood-fired built-in pizza oven that will be the centre of everyone’s attention.

A Stay-cation Setting

The sole purpose of your outdoor living space is to create a place where you can relax in the fresh air – away from the household chores, the screaming kids and the emails that keep on coming – just like a mini holiday. So why not create a resort-like vibe in your own backyard (pool or no-pool)? Think about creating a relaxation zone that’s comfortable enough for a nap and ensure you have just what you need, right where you need it – cold drinks in the fridge, beautiful glassware and a spot to lay your book. And when the party gets started, your outdoor living area is the place to socialise and enjoy a meal with friends and family.

Low Relaxed Seating

Just in case you missed it in point 3… you want to relax in your outdoor living space and the perfect way to do this is with daybeds and outdoor sofas. This season, you’ll also notice an abundance of modular sofas, which let you change the seating arrangement depending on the occasion, the season or your mood. Include a spot to read or look out onto the garden, as well as somewhere to recline with a cocktail and chat with friends. Add the finishing touches with cushions and a low table or two, and you’re done!

Neutral Tones or Bold Colours

Lucky for us there’s a colour palette to suit all tastes this season. Neutral colours on a background of natural materials such as wood and rattan continue to be popular. But, if you prefer a pop of colour, take your inspiration from resorts in Greece, the Mediterranean and Morocco with oranges, blues and turquoises.

Whether you’re close to the beach on the Gold Coast, living the tree-change lifestyle of Currumbin Valley, Oxenford and Tamborine Mountain, enjoying one of Australia’s most liveable cities – Brisbane – or slowing down the pace over the border in Northern NSW… outdoor living is a true way of life for all of us.
